Your Guide to Getting an Ontario Driver's Licence

Navigating the path to a driver’s licence can seem complicated, but the process is designed to help you become a safe and responsible driver. Ontario uses a graduated licensing system that provides new drivers with the skills they need to earn their full licence. At Prime Steering, we’re here to guide you through every step of this journey, from your first permit to your full G licence.

The G1 Learner's Permit

Your G1 licence is the first step in the graduated licensing process. To get it, you must pass a written knowledge test about the rules of the road and traffic signs. You can take this test once you are 16 years old.

What Your G1 Licence Allows:

  • You can drive on all roads with an accompanying driver who has a minimum of four years of driving experience and a valid G or G2 licence.
  • The accompanying driver must be the only other person in the front passenger seat.
  • You must have a blood-alcohol level of zero.

The G2 Licence

The G2 licence is the next stage and is achieved by passing your first road test. This test evaluates your basic driving skills, including turns, parking, and navigating city streets.

How Prime Steering Can Help:

Reduced Waiting Period: Completing a certified beginner driver education course with us can reduce your G1 waiting period from 12 months to just 8 months.

Professional Preparation: Our instructors will give you hands-on training to prepare you for every part of the G2 test, increasing your confidence and chance of passing on the first try.

What Your G2 Licence Allows:

  • You can drive on your own without an accompanying driver on most roads.
  • You must have a blood-alcohol level of zero.
  • You can carry passengers.

The G Full Licence

The final stage of the licensing process is getting your full G licence. You must pass a second road test that includes a highway driving component.

How to Prepare for Your G Test:

  • Our advanced driving lessons are designed to prepare you for the final test, focusing on key skills like highway merging, lane changes, and safe city driving.
  • This is your final opportunity to solidify your skills and earn the freedom of a full licence.

How much extra practice should I get?

We recommend that our students get as much practice as possible in addition to their lessons. Consistent practice with a qualified driver is key to mastering the skills needed to pass your road test and become a safe driver.

Do you accommodate international driving systems?

Yes. Our MTO-approved instructors are trained to help drivers from any background transition to Ontario's specific rules of the road. We can help you understand the local traffic patterns and safe driving practices.

How long will it take to get my licence?

Ontario's graduated licensing system has a minimum waiting period for your tests. However, completing a certified driving course with us can reduce your G1 waiting period from 12 months to just 8 months. The total time depends on your progress and when you book your tests.
